On January 10th, 2016, just two days after his 69th birthday, music and fashion icon David Bowie passed away from liver cancer. He had just released a new album, Blackstar which was recorded in secret and was to be his goodbye to fans.

Off that album, the music video for his song “Lazarus” is known to be one of the most poetic yet heartbreaking. The video is flooded with comments saying “David Bowie looked straight into the eyes of death, and used it to create his last masterpiece”.

To celebrate his life, David Bowie’s pianist, Mike Garsen, held A Bowie Celebration on what would’ve been his 75th birthday on Saturday. This has been an annual event with many rock artists participating by covering some of his greatest hits. This year featured Def Leppard performing “Drive-By Saturday”, Noel Gallagher covering “Valentine’s Day”, and members of Duran Duran playing “Let’s Dance”. A Bowie Celebration can still be streamed online.

RIP Starman.

In recent Bowie news, there is a new documentary in the works, directed by Brett Morgen who was behind the Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck. The new Bowie film will include thousands of hours of unseen footage.

Last week, David Bowie’s estate sold the publishing rights to his music catalog to Warner Music Group. The sale was made for $250 million, after months of negotiating.

The deal covers six decades of music with 26 albums, including his classic tracks like “Fame”, “Space Oddity” and “Heroes”.
